S. African churches say Mbeki's silence makes Zimbabwe worse

South African church leaders criticized their government's silence on Zimbabwe today, calling for a stronger response to the escalating police brutality in Harare. Setri Nyomi General Secretary of WARC spoke out against the arrests and police harassment over the last week, specifically naming his concern over arrests of members of the Student Christian Movement.

The Student Christian Movement of Zimbabwe has lamented about what it says is the "continued criminal and sinful repression of students by the State, using brutal force" following the arrest of 21 students in the second city of Bulawayo this week.

WCC's General Secretary called on SCMs and church youth for their urgent input into the future of the ecumenical movement. He made his appeal in an address to the WSCF Asia-Pacific Region's EASYNET conference at SCM India headquarters in Bangalore yesterday.
