Brazilian senior friend and long-time supporter of WSCF, the Rev'd Jorge Domingues has been named new head of Evangelization, Church Growth and Mission work for the United Methodist Church USA.

Rev'd Domingues appointment story from the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church follows below.

The Rev. Jorge Domingues is the new interim head of three inter-related program areas of the international mission agency of The United Methodist Church.

A native of Brazil, he was confirmed on October 10 as deputy general secretary for units concerned with Evangelization and Church Growth, Mission Contexts and Relationships, and Mission Education. He succeeds the Rev. Sam Dixon who on the same date became the director of the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR).

Rev. Domingues is a clergyman of the Methodist Church of Brazil and was educated at a Methodist seminary and Federal University in Brazil and New York University. While working full time, he earned the Master of Science degree in management and international public service from New York University in 2006.

The position Domingues now holds as interim covers responsibilities ranging from contextual analysis of new mission locations to the management of ecumenical mission relationships. He supervises 40 staff members and has major duties in maintaining linkages with partner churches around the world.

Staff members who relate to mission partners in Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America are within Domingues’ units, as are ethnic and language ministry plans in the United States. Other programs include projected mission academies for clergy and laity, new church starts, human rights advocacy and a large portfolio of scholarships.

Domingues has worked for the mission board in a variety of roles since 1996 and later worked in the areas of grants administration, ecumenical relations and Latin American and Hispanic/Latino ministries. He joined the staff as a specialist in youth and young adult ministries. Since July 2006, he has been an associate general secretary for the program areas he now oversees and in this capacity has helped to develop and implement a new organizational style of operation for these units. He is fluent in Portuguese, English, and Spanish.

Jorge Luiz F. Domingues was born in 1964. In 1985 he graduated from Cesar Dacorso Filho, a Methodist seminary located in Rio de Janeiro. He holds two degrees from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, a Bachelor of Arts and Masters of Arts in sociology and anthropology.

After serving in several pastorates in Brazil, in 1984 Domingues joined the staff of the Ecumenical Land Pastoral, a program that provides training for rural works outside Rio. From there, he went to the Ana Gonzaga Ecological Center of the Methodist Church of Brazil, where he remained until he joined the staff of Global Ministries.

Domingues was a member of the policy-making Central Committee of the World Council of Churches from 1988 to 1991 and youth adviser to the ecumenical organization from 1992 to 1998. He has a long affiliation with the World Student Christian Federation.

He and his wife, the Rev. Rosângela S. Oliveira, have one son, André Luiz. The family is part of the United Methodist Church of St. Paul and St. Andrew in New York City.
